E-scooters and vehicle-like devices (fäG)
Sven Meier, president of the Verkehrsschule Zug, provides information about traffic rules and situations for users of e-scooters and vehicle-like devices. Do you have any questions or uncertainties? Do not hesitate to contact him for accurate information.
New forms of mobility in road traffic are becoming increasingly popular, especially means of transportation, such as e-scooters or devices that are powered exclusively by the user’s own physical strength. These vehicle-like devices (fäG) are equipped with either wheels or castors. Popular and well-known devices include skateboards, scooters, kickboards, and inline skates.
Pedestrians are confronted with new risk factors on the sidewalk and on neighbourhood streets; many of these e-scooters and fäGs can be found seemingly at random on all traffic paths. Furthermore, rented e-scooters are often left on the street or sidewalk after use, and in some cases, people drive and park wherever it suits them. It is time to take a closer look at some facts and rules regarding fäG.
The most important facts regarding fäG as a means of transport
- They are allowed on all traffic paths intended for pedestrians (e.g., sidewalks), with pedestrians having the right of way.
- Riding in bicycle lanes is allowed.
- Cycling on the roadway in speed 30 zones and pedestrian zones is allowed.
- They are prohibited on main roads and when there is a pedestrian or pedestrian-only ban.
- Pedestrians are allowed to cross the pedestrian crossing, but they do not have the right of way.
- At night and in poor visibility, riders must have a white light on the front and a red light on the back of their body or device.
Useful information about e-scooters
- The scooter may only be ridden on bicycle lanes or cycling paths. Riding on sidewalks is prohibited.
- The maximum speed must not exceed 20 km/h.
- E-scooters may only be ridden without restriction from the age of 16 years or from the age of 14 years with a moped permit.
- Pedestrian crossings may not be crossed while driving the e-scooter.
- Although it is not compulsory to wear a helmet, it is recommended to protect oneself with a helmet.
FäG and E-Trottinette are sometimes difficult to steer and brake. Therefore, you must adjust your speed and driving style to your abilities. What concerns all other road users also concerns you: drive with foresight and always be ready to brake.
