Minimum age: 16 years old. The basic theory test can be taken one month before reaching the minimum age at the earliest.

Cat. A (limited 35 kW)

Minimum age: 18 years old. The basic theory test can be taken one month before reaching the minimum age at the earliest.

You can learn most of the ASA’s official exam questions from CD-ROMs, on the Internet or with apps from licensed organisations. Note: the ASA has only published 80% of all exam questions.

After the course, you will receive a first aid course certificate. You will need this to apply for a learner’s permit. NOTE: The first aid certificate must be less than six years old in order to apply for a learner’s permit.

Take an eye test

The eye test must be completed by a certified optician or ophthalmologist (see page 4, ‘Application for a Learner’s Permit’). Take a form of identification (identity card, passport, residence permit card) to this appointment. NOTE: The eye test is valid for 24 months.

Have your documents ready

You must have the following documents with you when you submit the application form:

  • A colour passport photo that meets the ‘Criteria for Acceptable Photos for Passports and Identity Cards’. PC photos are not eligible as the resolution is too low
  • The eye test certification
  • The first aid certificate
  • A form of photo ID (identity card, passport or residence permit card)

Wait for clearing to take the theory test

Your application with your original documents will be reviewed and after a few days, you will receive a registration form for the theory test by mail.

Before taking the practical driving test, you must attend the eight-hour traffic safety courses (VKU). You can register for the course directly via the link below. You must be in possession of a valid learner’s permit.

The team from the Verkehrsschule Zug will let you register your proof of having attended the traffic safety courses at the department of motor vehicles.

Learning to drive with a driving instructor

You will carry out practical training together with a driving instructor from the Zug Traffic School or an authorized attendant. With our many years of expertise, we offer modern, qualified and serious training and preparation for the practical test.

With a learner’s permit, you can also practice while accompanied by a person who is not a driving instructor. However, the accompanying person must have reached the age of 23 and have held the relevant license for at least three years (not including on a probationary basis). In addition, the person accompanying the person must be able to easily reach the handbrake during the ride. Use an ‘L’ sign: During practice rides, an ‘L’ sign must be clearly visible at the rear of the vehicle.

Note: As of 1/1/2021, anyone under the age of 20 who wants to take the practical driving test must have accrued at least 12 months of driving experience with a learner’s permit. For people over 20 years of age, there is no such requirement. In that case, the driving instructor will decide when you are ready to take the test. You can register online or send the completed form to: Strassenverkehrsamt Kanton Zug, Hinterbergstrasse 41, 6312 Steinhausen. Cancellations: If you are unable to attend the test date, cancel your registration in good time by telephone (subject to a fee!) or via the Internet.

Pass the test

You will receive an official stamp from the StVA on your learner’s permit once you have passed your driving test. You can leave the course directly in a Cat. B vehicle.

Wait for your driver's license and pass the WAB course

New drivers receive a probationary driver’s license (valid for three years). Within the first 12 months, one further seven-hour training day must be completed.
